And I'm disappointed with the response of the bishop—completely conciliatory toward the politician while dismissing the view of the deacon.

At the same time, I don't think the deacon's approach was correct, although his position was.

Amy Wellborn has been covering that situation very closely.Deacon Bill Burnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11484509700642430451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16278999.post-50802091717376479162007-01-27T22:20:00.000-07:002007-01-27T22:20:00.000-07:00Speaking of deacons, did you hear about the Cathol...Speaking of deacons, did you hear about the Catholic deacon who lambasted a pro-abortion politician who was in the congregation that day? Seems to be a recent scandal.Elliothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08144417439505262113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16278999.post-57576829879255123332007-01-25T20:52:00.000-07:002007-01-25T20:52:00.000-07:00Thanks again. I think it's just easier to write because I can edit, I can give the answers more thought, although, admittedly, often the words come in a torrent.

I was on the speech team (not debate team) in High School, competed in "Creative Expression" and learned a great deal. But it wasn't "off the cuff" speaking, it wasn't teaching so this is a different kind of public speaking. There are no grades, per se, but the stakes are so much higher. The rest of the RCIA team and one of our priests who has been there a few of the times I spoke has been very encouraging. But teaching is a new thing, so I know to expect things to be rough at first.

On the speech team, I spoke as I wrote because I spoke EXACTLY as I had written and memorized the speech. Now, I throw together a lesson, give it to God, and go up and talk to people, trying to rmember to make eye contact, smile, etc etc. But my weakness is disorganization...35-45 min is a great deal different than an 8 minute memorized speech! LOL

Thank you for YOUR encouragement.

Where have you been published? I seem to have a block involved with publications...I look over the things I have, check out my "Writer's Market", and think I have nothing to offer the professional market. Any advice there?

By the way, I do think you're an amazing writer, extremely perceptive, and you "speak" with authority. So good luck to you, and God bless you! :-)Adorohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02853244433854822731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16278999.post-63873409014535851942007-01-25T20:15:00.000-07:002007-01-25T20:15:00.000-07:00Well, read what you write, and I don't think you c...Well, read what you write, and I don't think you can go wrong.

Seriously, though, what you write has so much depth. If you don't think yourself confident enough to speak in the same way, maybe you need to seek a means to gain that confidence (perhaps, Toastmasters).

I have the opposite problem. I can really get going on a tear when someone asks me my opinion. However, when I'm asked to publish my words (and I've done so both professionally and academically), I don't have the confidence to put myself out there. Part of the problem is that I see others who do it so well. (Guess what? You're on that list.) I feel that it's pointless to add words when so many others have spoken so well.

I think we all sell ourselves short, and I think Satan encourages that. Whatever he can do to keep us from using our gifts gives him strength. What's important for us to recognize is that he has no real strength of his own—only what he can steal from us through discouragement.

Good luck, and God bless you!Deacon Bill Burnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11484509700642430451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16278999.post-81681292928662465082007-01-25T19:18:00.000-07:002007-01-25T19:18:00.000-07:00Yeah....thanks...I have a lot to learn!
