Isaiah 58:1–9a; Matthew 9:14–15

Today is our first day of abstinence following Ash Wednesday’s fasting and abstinence. Abstaining from meat doesn’t seem quite as challenging after a fast day, but some of us still struggle, especially when tempted with the aromas of burgers cooking on a grill, or a rotisserie chicken roasting in the supermarket. I should probably stop right there before you all give me the St. Stephen treatment. We have our minimal fasting requirements in the western Church. Our eastern Christian brothers and sisters embrace this practice much more intently. They begin fasting before Lent, and they essentially eat a vegan diet with no oil or wine through the entirety of Lent.

Clearly the ancient Jews took fasting very seriously.

James 1:1-11; Mark 8:11-13

“Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

I think very few of us look forward to being tested. I don’t mean the kinds of tests that allow us to demonstrate our skills or intelligence. Those can be kind of fun and exciting. I mean the kinds of tests that force you to endure something unpleasant.

1 Kings 10:1–10; Mark 7:14–23

“Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

In yesterday’s passage from Mark, Jesus is approached by Pharisees and scribes who question Jesus about his disciples’ failure to perform acts of ritual purification before eating. He chastises them because they are more concerned with the ritual law than the moral law.

Isaiah 58:7–10; 1 Corinthians 2:1–5; Matthew 5:13–16

“You are the salt of the earth.

“You are the light of the world.

“[Y]our light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

Do you notice how much of the work of the gospel is placed at our feet? We think of salvation as being something given to us, and it certainly is! We are saved by grace from God, a gratuitous gift. We can’t earn it and will never deserve it.
