God doesn't want you to be happy—Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time (Cycle C)
2 Samuel 12:7–10, 13; Galatians 2:16, 19–21; Luke 7:36–8:3
God doesn't want you to be happy.
God doesn't want you to be prosperous.
God doesn't want you to be successful.
God doesn't want you to "be nice" to others.
These are not by any means bad things, mind you, but God doesn't want them for you, at least not as ends in themselves. These are not the goals of a Christian life. God's plan is much bigger than this.
Yet many American Christians believe that this is what Christianity is about: being nice to one another so that God will be nice to them and help them be happy. In many Christian circles, these are the aims.
