St. Augustine on Rising and Falling

Still reading Confessions along with my other morning devotions. I came across the following today:

It is one thing to rise rapidly, another thing not to fall.My life is full of such lapses, and my one hope is in your great mercy.

I'm struck by the fact that St. Augustine took an incredible risk by writing this book. In it, he lays out all of his failings, both prior to his conversion and following it. He also reveals to us that his world then provided for the same sinful distractions and that there is another option.
